New Music for the Harp ∙ Chamber Orchestra ∙ Voice

 

The next season of the Álvarez Chamber Orchestra will consist of two concerts showcasing the works awarded first prize in the last three composition competitions organised by the orchestra.

  • The Song of Britomartis by Molly Kien, winner of  Plucked from Nowhere, 2009.

  • Pivot by Torsten Philipp Hermann, winner of Free Style, 2010.

  • E piove in petto una dolcezza inquieta  by Massimo Lauricella, winner of Going for a Song, 2011.

 

The works of the adjudicators of these competitions will be conducted by Geoffrey Álvarez:

  • Manzana for guitar and orchestra by Giles Swayne commissioned by Tom Kertens for the International Guitar Foundation and Festival.

  • "Es ist genug..." by Edwin Roxburgh, commissioned by Parnassus, conducted by Peter Stark.

  • Concertino by Geoffrey Alvarez for piano and chamber orchestra, awarded a prize in the Tansman Composers' Competition, Łódź, Poland 2006

 

Two composers have written works specifically for this orchestra:  

  • Concerto for harp and chamber orchestra by celebrated Polish master Bogusław Schaeffer and

  • Spiders' Web by Paul Patterson commissioned with the assistance of the                                           PRS for Music Foundtation.

 

The season will also include the Concerto for Two Pianos and Strings by Malcolm Williamson.

Geoffrey Álvarez will introduce his  paper Malcolm's Dancing Numbers which investigates the metaphysical implications, symbolism and compositional techniques in this work in a pre-concert lecture. The complete paper may be downloaded here.
